When words fail and our hearts are weak and confused, when all the truths that we thought we believed feel like a lie, when God doesn't feel good or near, our hearts need constant reminders of truth. Objective truth that doesn't change when dealt devastating circumstances. We need reminders of that truth even when we don't believe, even when doubt.Just hours after my son died I sat in a living room surrounded by friends and family. The air was thick with grief and confusion and despair and then a friend opened God's Word and broke the silence as he began reading from the Psalms. After he was finished he passed it to the next person and the next and the next.

Those first hours of mourning, when words failed, when our hearts had just been shattered, when all that we knew to be true suddenly felt like a lie, God's Word reminded us of Him, of His goodness, of the forever hope we have in Him.

The days following my son's death I opened God's Word over and over and over, not because my belief was strong, rather I searched God's Word for hope because my faith was weak, gone even. I opened God's Word to believe again. When our hearts are grieving the reminders of hope and truth need to be constant. I carried verses in my pocket, in my purse, in my car. There were verses taped to walls and cabinets and mirrors. It wasn't pretty or perfect. It was necessary. In case you are in that spot where you are desperate to be reminded of God's goodness and His help and His nearness over and over and over again like I was (and still am) I pulled together 8 of my favorite verses. They are listed below but you can also print them out to use everyday. My advice is to take put them in the places where your heart wanders the fastest.

TO THE FRIEND OR FAMILY OF A MAMA GRIEVING

One of the most helpful things anyone did for me after my son died was to write out verses of truth and hope. That gift did two things:

  1. It reminded me that they were thinking about me, they were praying for me and they had not forgotten that my heart was broken.

  2. It gave me a tangible source of hope and reminder of God that I was desperate for. If you know a mama grieving, save these verse cards, print them out and gift them to her. It is a simple, small gift that will have eternal value.
