Dear friend,

I have written and rewritten this letter to you.

The truth is, I don’t have the right words to say.

That’s kind of how this goes though, right? No one actually has the right words to say.  There aren’t actually words that make everything better.Instead, if I’m honest, I’m sitting here in tears, speechless. I so wish I could spare you the pain. My heart is tender to the fact that, weekly it seems, we hear of family after new family who is entering into a storm that has become all too familiar to me.  And so, today, although I don’t have many eloquent words, I offer you my tears, and I can offer you my prayers.

As your friend – as your sister in this journey – I want you to know that I mean this. I’m praying for you. Because if there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that we can’t do this alone. We can’t face the hard days alone. God must be with us. And he is.So as we face this week together, I’m keeping it simple.  Here are my prayers for you:

  • I pray that you rest in the grace that God gives you today. He’s got plenty for tomorrow, too, but he just hasn’t given it to you yet. His grace is sufficient for you. [2 Corinthians 12:9]

  • I pray that you know what it means to be cared for… that your friends enter in and show up. And that even when they don’t get it exactly right, I pray that you are able to show them grace in response. [Romans 12:15]

  • I pray that you have space to grieve. No tears. Alone. With others. I pray that you give yourself the freedom to just be, just where you need to be. [Matthew 11:28]

  • I pray that you are able to experience joy and confidence today, recognizing that you are a mother. You are a mother. [Mark 9:37]

  • I pray that, although you are a mother, your identity doesn’t rest there. God has called you by name. You are his. May you be grounded in him. [Isaiah 43]

  • I pray that you have the capacity to embrace the conflicting emotions – that you can feel the joy with the sorrow, the hope with the fear, the excitement for others and the longing for yourself. I pray for the boundary lines in your heart to fall in pleasant places; you have a beautiful inheritance. [Psalm 16]

  • I pray that you have wisdom to know when to speak and when to hold back, that you can speak boldly of your baby or be confident in your privacy, that you can wrestle with truth and bravely whisper prayers, and that you are free to run into the Savior’s arms, in desperate need of his grace. Oh, I pray for his grace. [John 1:14-16]

Most of all, sweet friend, I pray that you know that you are seen.  You are loved.  You are considered worthy and able and known.  I pray that you find comfort in God’s presence, that you rest in his goodness, that you see glimpses of his kindness… all week long.  Even if the week feels hard, even if you dread the day, I pray that you’re able to get through it because he’s carrying you.  Yes, you are strong and brave and courageous.  But, oh – he’s so much more.

“Behold! The dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away... Behold I am making all things new.” REVELATION 21:3-5

I wish I could give you a hug.  I wish I could sit down and hear you share all about your story.  I wish I could take all this pain away from you.  Oh, my sweet friend – I’d do it in a heartbeat if I could. But today, just know this.  You have someone standing up for you in prayer if you can’t. You have someone hoping for you if you feel hopeless.  You have someone asking God to show himself to you, even if he seems distant.  I’ll do it. I’m here. You are known. You are seen. You are loved.Draw near to him. He invites you.I’m rooting for you.

Love,

Your sister, your friend… Another aching woman on Mother’s Day, Here to walk with you towards Him.
