The second title or name that the prophet Isaiah gives to this child who would be born is “mighty God.”
What does that title help us to understand about who He is?
What does that mean for us today as hurting, broken mamas?
First, what does “mighty God” tell us about who this Jesus is?
MIGHTY GOD
This word means: mighty (mighty, strong, brave).
The very might of God
What does that title help us understand about who this child that is born, this Immanuel, this Jesus is?
Immediately we learn that this child that would be born is God. This is so important for us to understand and to believe.
Here He is called “mighty” by the prophet Isaiah. But by attaching God to it we see that He is different than you and me. Though He would be born and put on flesh, He is God and we are not.
Attaching the title God here reminds us that Jesus holds all the characteristics we know to be true about God: He is living. He is eternal. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present, sovereign, holy, righteous. He is creator. He is good. He is true. He is just and merciful and gracious and ever-faithful. And He is the only God upon who we should call. This baby born would be our perfect redeemer, rescuer, and Savior.
And when we look at the word mighty that word describes Jesus’ strength. His strength is perfect. His bravery unmatched.
In other places in the Bible we see this same word “mighty” used to describe warriors -- depicting bravery, courage, and action. So this name “Mighty God,” points to the day when all of God’s enemies, physical and spiritual, will be vanquished and will find their end.
This name “mighty God” reminds us that the brokenness that surrounds us will one day have it’s end and Jesus will bring about restoration and redemption fully.
And what does that mean for us today as hurting, broken mamas?
That we never have to be afraid. Because our God is mighty. One with limitless power. Perfect strength. And a bravery that took Him to the cross, for you.
We see in Psalm 23 that even when we walk in the valley of death, the valley of deep darkness, we don’t have to be afraid because He is with us. Jesus is there with His perfect strength and unmatched bravery. His limitless power.
Not only are you never alone -- but you have this Mighty God with you.
I know you are afraid. I am too. I know you are full of questions and doubts and insecurities. But our Mighty God -- this child that would be born, Immanuel, He is not afraid. He has no fear. His strength is without limits and He is with you.
For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.
DEUTERONOMY 10:17
He is the mighty God. As he has perfect wisdom, so too does he have a perfect strength that is beyond measure, and we see that most obviously in His sacrifice for you and me. His bravery on display as He faced evil and sin and death. And His might as He conquered death when He rose from the grave. And His perfect love as He willingly did both to make a way that we might be connected to Him.
The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
ZEPHANIAH 3:17
